16. Exoskeleton

An exoskeleton is the external skeleton that supports and protects an animal’s body from the outside, rather than the endoskeleton of a human or dog that supports internally.

Exoskeletons play a big role in their defense from predators, in their support, and in providing attachment for muscles.

This is a photo of a scallop shell. Scallops have exoskeletons, or “shells”, to protect themselves from predators and pests and also from rocks and another things have may be tumbling around in the water.
